Key responsibilities included:

  • Prepare and submit insurance claims to carriers; follow up on unpaid, rejected, or denied claims, resolving issues and resubmitting as needed. 
  • Review claims and bills for accuracy and completeness; obtain missing payer information to support processing. 
  • Post adjustments, refunds, and transfers of responsibility; update accounting records accordingly. 
  • Generate and send invoices; reconcile billing data and compile reports; field inquiries from internal teams or clients. 
  • Verify billing data, prepare statements, process incoming payments, and accurately apply them. 
  • Investigate and resolve discrepancies, including misapplied payments—potentially initiating collections or engaging third-party collections.
  • Maintain and update account records with high accuracy and generate accounts receivable/billing reports for management. 
  • Communicate with clients regarding account status, outstanding charges, and billing disputes. 

🎓 Qualifications & Skills

Educational & Professional Background

  • High school diploma or GED required, finance, healthcare administration, or related field preferred.  
  • Prior experience in accounts receivable billing, insurance billing, or customer service/data entry welcomed. 

Technical & Domain Knowledge

  • Understanding of accounting principles, billing processes, collections, and finance fundamentals.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology, insurance providers (Medicare, Medicaid), coding (ICD‑10, CPT), and EHR/billing software. 
  • Proficiency in financial or billing systems, and Microsoft Office—especially Excel. 

Soft Skills

  • Excellent communication, organization, attention to detail, and math skills.
  • Strong problem-solving and research abilities to resolve billing or denial issues
  • Customer service orientation and ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

  • Educational paths include post-secondary certificates or associate’s degrees in medical billing/coding, health information tech, or accounting

  • 1–3+ years in insurance or medical billing/collections, preferably within clinical or insurance environments.
  • Experience with prior authorizations, claims appeals, posting remittances, and eligibility verification.
