Mock Trial

Your job assignment with Trial Science will be for a Mock Trial.  This project will be for 10 hours for one day.  Here are some things to expect:

  • A mock trial is a “Dress Rehearsal” for the trial where the attorneys for the Plaintiff and Defendant will each give a presentation on their side of the case. You will fill out a brief survey after each presentation, and then afterwards, you will discuss what you have seen/heard with the rest of the group.  There are no “right or wrong” opinions in this type of group.
  • You will be required to fill out a confidential questionnaire.  The questionnaire has some personal questions on it (like income level, education, etc.), but is mostly made up of attitude questions that have no right or wrong answers.  If you feel you cannot answer such questions, tell us now so that we can find someone else to do the job.
  • The entire session is recorded, but your name and identity will be confidential.  The attorneys are the only ones to see these recordings, but sometimes a brief segment is used in teaching lawyers and judges various things about juries.  You will sign a consent form/waiver saying that you give permission to be recorded.  If you do not want to be on the video, tell us now so that we can find another person to do the job.
  • Once you have committed to being in the Mock Trial, you cannot leave until the job is finished.  If you cannot serve for the entire 10 hours, which means during the lunch break as well, tell us now so that we can find a person who can work the entire time.
  • We always ask more people to attend the groups than the lawyers need because someone might not show up on the day of the event.  These “extra people” – alternates – will sometimes be needed to participate because someone fails to show up, but sometimes the alternates will not be needed because they have enough people to fill out the group.  At those times, if you are not needed to participate, you will be paid a 2-hour “show-up” fee and you will be released.
  • Bottled water, coffee, assorted sodas, and snacks will be provided throughout the day. A lunch buffet will also be provided.  It includes build your own sandwiches, pasta salad, house salad, and dessert.  You may bring your own drinks, snacks, or lunch but they will not have access to a refrigerator or microwave so bring your food accordingly (in an insulated lunch bag or mini cooler for instance).  You may also want to bring a jacket or sweater as the meeting rooms can be chilly and hard to regulate.
  • Parking at the hotel will be paid for. Bring the parking ticket in with you and a validation sticker will be given to you at check-in.  You must park in the hotel parking garage, if you park elsewhere, your parking will not be paid for.
