The Optician facilitates an excellent experience for the Optical customer by delivering high quality care and individualized service. The Optician assists the Optical Manager/ fellow Opticians in customer sales, clinical care and education and training. Required to maintain the utmost privacy and confidentiality when dealing with patients as required by law, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND BASIC DUTIES

1. Assumes responsibility for customer service and sales.
a. Provides direct customer sales to include the evaluation of frame, lenses, and fit to accommodate patient's needs and lifestyle as well as their ability to pay.
b. Knowledgeable of specific requirements of the various managed care vision plans.
c. Counsels patients with insurance as to the specifics of their coverage including but not limited to the patient's responsibility, time limitations for filing, ect.
d. Prepares patient's bill accurately inputting charges into the computer system at point of sale.
e. Maintains patient's information in database as well as their medical/optical record.
f. Maintains smooth customer flow during hours of operation.
g. Monitor wait times for services and for goods being ordered keeping them apprised on actions being taken.

2. Assumes responsibility for the technical/clinical aspects involved in the daily operation of the Optical Shop.
a. Measures, fits, adapts, adjusts, repairs, and dispenses eyewear.
b. Prepares and delivers work orders to the laboratory for lens grinding and eyewear fabrication as needed.
c. Verifies quality and measurements of material returned from the lab
d. Operates low vision optical devices and assists in their fabrication, or supervises others/vendors in doing this.
e. Measures papillary distance in order to correctly center lenses for individual customers.
f. Performs lensometry in order to confirm prescription, duplicate present glasses, verify prism, and bifocal add-ons.
g. Uses the lens clock to confirm that the base curve is correctly prescribed.
h. Performs diagnostic work for physicians with regard to patient Rx, prisms, bifocals and lens type.

3. Assumes responsibility for the education and teaching of physicians, staff members and patients.
a. Provides doctors and technicians with information on optical products available.
b. Acts as a resource/consultant for customers.
c. Educates customers on the "fit" and expectations of new lenses during adjustment phase.

4. Assumes responsibility for maintaining professional competency.
a. Responsible for receiving and maintaining licensure through the State Board of Opticians.
b. Responsible for participating in continuing education for both technical, merchandising, and sale of optical goods.
