Position Overview:
We are seeking a dependable and safety-focused Switchman to join our team in Hooks, TX. This position is responsible for assisting with rail switching operations, ensuring locomotives and railcars are handled safely and efficiently. The ideal candidate will have a strong mechanical aptitude, the ability to follow safety procedures, and experience operating heavy equipment such as a trachoe or backhoe.

 

Key Responsibilities:

• Inspect locomotive for operational readiness by completing company-required checks prior to operation

• Receive and interpret switch lists detailing the location of loads, empties, and railcars requiring special handling

• Operate locomotives safely while applying knowledge of territory, including terrain, grades, curves, and crossings

• Provide proper warning signals and operate the train in a safe and efficient manner

• Follow switching instructions, radio communications, and TAC rules and regulations

• Monitor tracks for obstructions and anticipate potential operational issues

• Diagnose minor equipment malfunctions and perform minor maintenance when needed

• Assist with track-related work such as tie replacement, rail adjustments, and switch adjustments

• Notify appropriate personnel and prepare reports explaining any accidents, delays, or operational issues

• Operate trachoe/backhoe equipment when necessary to assist with rail or site work

• Perform additional duties as assigned to support rail and yard operations

Qualifications:

• Ability to operate trachoe or backhoe equipment

• Strong attention to detail and commitment to workplace safety

• Ability to follow written instructions, switch lists, and radio communication protocols

• Mechanical aptitude and ability to perform minor maintenance tasks

• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions

• Ability to lift, climb, walk uneven terrain, and perform physically demanding work

• Previous rail, heavy equipment, or industrial experience preferred but not required
