Heavy Equipment Operator

Job Overview

The Heavy Equipment Operator plays a critical role in the safe handling, movement, and preparation of steel products for shipment. This position supports daily production and shipping operations by operating heavy equipment—including overhead cranes—packaging finished materials, and ensuring all products meet company quality and safety standards. This is a hands‑on role well‑suited for individuals with experience around steel, rigging, or industrial equipment who are interested in advancing their skills in crane operations.

🛠 Key Responsibilities

Heavy Equipment & Crane Operations

• Operate overhead cranes to move steel coils, sheets, plates, and bundled materials throughout the facility.
• Safely load and unload trucks using cranes and other material‑handling equipment.
• Perform daily equipment and crane inspections and report mechanical or safety concerns.
• Use proper rigging methods to secure loads and ensure safe, controlled movement of materials.
• Work closely with signalpersons, yard staff, and supervisors to complete lifts safely and efficiently.

Packaging & Material Handling

• Package steel products to customer specifications, including banding, wrapping, tagging, and skidding.
• Measure, weigh, and verify product dimensions and identification prior to shipment.
• Prepare materials for outbound shipping with a focus on accuracy, quality, and damage prevention.
• Operate forklifts and other industrial equipment as required.

Quality Control & Documentation

• Inspect finished products for defects, damage, or specification discrepancies.
• Complete production logs, packaging records, and shipping documentation accurately.
• Communicate with production, shipping, and supervision teams to coordinate workflow and priorities.

Safety & Maintenance

• Follow all OSHA regulations and company safety policies, including required PPE.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
• Immediately report hazards, unsafe conditions, or equipment issues.

📚 Skills & Qualifications

• Experience operating heavy equipment in an industrial, steel, or manufacturing environment (preferred).
• Prior exposure to overhead cranes, rigging, or working around heavy lifts strongly preferred.
• Basic math skills and ability to read tape measures, calipers, and production paperwork.
• Knowledge of rigging equipment such as slings, hooks, and load‑securement devices.
• Ability to work on your feet, lift, bend, and operate in a physically demanding environment.
• Strong safety awareness and attention to detail.
• Forklift certification a plus; crane certification a plus (training opportunities may be available).
