Tool Room Grinder – 1st Shift

Pay: Up to $30.00/hour (based on experience)
Shift: 1st Shift – 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM
Location: Howell, MI

About the Company: Express Employment is representing our client in Howell, one of the Midwest’s largest producers of deep drawn metal stampings. Engineering in house with tool building capabilities, operating advanced high‑speed presses (up to 300 tons), and maintaining strict quality standards. The tool room plays a critical role in supporting this level of performance—and they're adding a grinder with expertise to strengthen that capability.

Position Summary

Seeking an experienced Tool Room Grinder for a grinding‑centric role. This position is ideal for a skilled trades professional who enjoys manual and CNC grinding work and wants to be part of a stable, long‑tenured manufacturing environment.

This is not a die repair–only position. The majority of the role focuses on precision grinding, with occasional opportunities to assist in die builds or maintenance as workload requires.

Primary Responsibilities (Approx. 70–80%)

• Perform manual grinding operations, including: Surface grinding, OD grinding, Manual ID grinding experience.
• Set up and operate grinders to produce precision die details and components
• Able to upskills train CNC ID/OD grinding over time.
• Maintain tight tolerances and ensure high‑quality finishes +/- 0.001.
• Read and interpret blueprints, prints, and work instructions.
• Inspect work using precision measuring tools (micrometers, gauges, comparators).

Secondary Responsibilities (Approx. 20–30%)

• Support tool room operations during: Die builds, Die maintenance or repair.
• Assist with tool assembly or related tasks during peak workloads.
• Work cross‑functionally with toolmakers and tool room leadership as needed.

Required Experience & Skills

• 3-5 years proven experience in manual grinding (surface, OD; ID experience strongly preferred).
• Background in a tool room or precision manufacturing environment.
• Ability and willingness to learn manual and CNC ID/OD grinding.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
• Comfortable working in a production‑focused, tool room setting.
• Reliable, team‑oriented mindset with long‑term employment interest.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous experience with:
• CNC ID/OD grinders
• Tool & die or precision tooling environments
• Experience supporting die builds or maintenance
• Comfortable working independently with minimal supervision
