Engineering Manager

Engineering Manager Job Summary:
A growing manufacturing company is seeking an experienced and driven Engineering Manager to lead daily operations of its Engineering Department in a fast-paced, job shop manufacturing environment. This role is responsible for managing people, processes, and technical execution across engineering, estimating, and manufacturing support functions. The Engineering Manager will work closely with upper management, department leaders, and the shop floor to ensure successful project execution, accurate technical documentation, and continuous improvement. The ideal candidate is a hands-on leader who is comfortable working in both office and manufacturing settings and has deep knowledge of sheet metal fabrication operations.
Engineering Manager Responsibilities:
- Lead and manage daily operations of the Engineering Department, including Designers and Estimators, in an office and shop-floor manufacturing environment
- Hire, train, coach, mentor, and evaluate department staff, including performance and compensation reviews
- Promote a culture of operational discipline, accountability, safety, and continuous improvement
- Manage Engineering Change processes, revision control, and documented design deviations
- Oversee creation, accuracy, and distribution of Technical Data Packages (TDPs), including drawings, programs, and supporting documentation
- Ensure accurate BOMs, routers, work orders, material requirements, and manufacturing workflows
- Support estimating activities, cost comparisons, and feasibility reviews prior to job release
- Collaborate closely with manufacturing and production teams to improve efficiency, workflow, and job success
- Communicate directly with the shop floor to support manufacturing efficiency and resolve technical issues
- Identify, document, and implement manufacturing process improvements and standardized work practices
- Lead engineering involvement in new job launches, including project kickoffs, prototyping, and post-project reviews
- Maintain a strong feedback loop between engineering and manufacturing to capture ECRs and continuous improvement opportunities
- Communicate department performance, priorities, risks, and challenges to upper management
- Develop, track, and manage department goals, KPIs, staffing levels, and effective use of resources
- Ensure department procedures, documentation, and backup plans are current and followed
- Stay current with technology, industry trends, and best practices to maximize opportunity and minimize operational risk
- Enforce company policies, procedures, and safety requirements while supporting cross-functional teams as needed
- Perform additional duties as assigned
Schedule & Pay:
- 1st shift, Monday–Friday
- $75,000–$125,000/YR., based on experience
Engineering Manager Qualifications:
Required:
- High school diploma
- Minimum 3 years of experience in an engineering role within a manufacturing environment
- Minimum 3 years of experience in a management or leadership role
- Strong understanding of sheet metal manufacturing processes, equipment capabilities, limitations, and required operations
- Working knowledge of engineering standards and their application in fabrication (ASME, ANSI, AISC)
- Ability to work in a combination office and manufacturing environment, including occasional exposure to heat, weld smoke, and dust
- Ability to frequently use a computer and office equipment and occasionally lift up to 20 pounds
- Excellent communication, organization, and attention to detail
- Proven ability to coach, mentor, and develop staff while managing multiple priorities
Preferred:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
- 5+ years of experience in an engineering role
- 5+ years of experience in a management role
- 3+ years of experience as an Engineering Manager
- 3+ years of experience in sheet metal estimating
- Lean manufacturing training or continuous improvement experience
- Experience in a job shop manufacturing environment
- Experience with Global Shop Solutions and Microsoft Office 365
