Manufacturing Engineer Job Summary:

Manufacturing Engineer Responsibilities:

  • Planning, organizing, project managing, improving and implementing new and existing manufacturing processes and equipment, including design, documentation, capacity and quality systems
  • Initiate and implement equipment improvements, cost improvement projects, and in direct support of manufacturing operations
  • Develop and implement manufacturing equipment/technology strategy to support business goals of product growth, profitability and capacity management.
  • Serve as primary owner of manufacturing processes and their efficiencies, from both lean manufacturing and quality perspective
  • Design, development and introduction of processes, equipment and cost improvement activities related to manufacturing
  • Ensures processes can achieve annual operating plan targets on an ongoing basis
  • Maintains appropriate documentation
  • Drives continuous improvement through establishing methods and improving performance of systems and processes
  • Utilize specialized techniques for continuous improvement (e.g. Kaizen, Six Sigma, Total Quality Management)
  • Develops and implements new and maintains existing equipment and processes, ensuring compliance with corporate policy, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and/or similar regulatory agencies, and Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA)/Michigan Occupational Safety & Health Administration (MIOSHA) standards in areas of health, safety, and environmental assurance
  • Participate in new product development reviews, when applicable, and coordinates all deliverables with internal department members to ensure successful implementations
  • Conduct regular reviews of plant capacity; develops strategic plans and collaborates with plant management teams to assure operation has capacity to reliably meet product forecasts, including provisions for peak demand periods
  • Support all Manufacturing, Product, and Quality Engineering systems and standard operating procedures and process standard work
  • Troubleshoot production operational issues on daily basis and spend significant time on shop floor to serve as visible role model
  • Reports periodically to management, including completion of activities to schedule, performance to project expense budget, capital status to approved Request for Expenditure (RFE), cost and process performance, to keep management informed of project status
  • Coordinate manufacturing engineering activities for new product projects from concept through production, including equipment, tooling, process, costing, and quality, to meet corporate standards and project timelines
  • Regular, productive contact with New Product Development, Product Marketing, Purchasing, Quality Assurance, Production, Materials Management, Customer Service, Pre-Production and Finance department members
  • Participates in meetings with New Product Development team to assist with new product planning process
  • Effectively provides input and owns actions in areas of manufacturability, design, and cost effectiveness
  • Collaboratively represents manufacturing input into design review process
  • Coordinates engineering and production teams to assist with implementation of new products, product line enhancements, throughput improvements, and cost improvement activities
  • Supports productivity goals and ensures product and process compliance through communication and objective setting
  • Conducts regular reviews of projects with management and maintenance to ensure appropriate activities are being executed and proper interdepartmental coordination occurs
  • Consults with outside experts such as agencies, suppliers, governmental panels, and universities to assist with development of new material applications and manufacturing processes
  • Frequent contacts with customers, suppliers, testing agencies, governmental agencies, and universities

Manufacturing Engineer Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering or equivalent
  • High level critical thinking, problem solving, and decision-making skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present information in a clear, concise, manner while building relationships with stakeholders at all levels of the organization
  • Ability to create and communicate a clear project plan, tracking progress, and keeping stakeholders informed
  • Computer skills including word processing, spreadsheet and basic CAD applications
  • Experience in wood manufacturing is preferred
  • A customer-focused (internal and external) mindset, with the ability to collaborate in cross-functional teams
  • Time management skills to organize daily planning and monthly activities and meet deadlines
  • Ability to regularly be exposed to a production environment including the ability to lift up to 50lbs
  • Willingness to travel on a limited basis if required
