Salary: $18 to $21

HVAC technicians, or heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration entry-level mechanics and installers, install, maintain, and repair HVAC systems. Their responsibilities include: 
 
 
  • Installation: Install HVAC systems in residential, commercial, and industrial settings, including ductwork, air handlers, compressors, and thermostats 
     
     
  • Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance tasks and warranty work to ensure systems operate safely and efficiently 
     
     
  • Repair: Diagnose and troubleshoot system malfunctions, and perform repairs 
     
     
  • Testing: Inspect and test HVAC systems and components 
     
     
  • Documentation: Keep records of work performed, including equipment use, hours worked, and materials used 
     
     
  • Compliance: Ensure compliance with appliance standards and with OSHA 
     
     
HVAC technicians may also: 
 
 
  • Install electrical components and wiring 
     
     
  • Recharge refrigerant levels 
     
     
  • Check for leaks 
     
     
  • Perform energy-efficiency upgrades 
     
     
  • Respond to emergency service calls 
     
     
  • Attend training and classes to maintain skills and meet credential/certification requirements
