Job Description

The Logistics Specialist reports to the Regional Logistics Manager and is responsible for maintaining all Outside Haulers Contracts and Insurance Certificates, ensuring they are up to date. The role involves running and distributing reports on behalf of the Logistics department.

This position also covers and assists the Transportation Supervisors and the Logistics Team on a day-to-day basis, ensuring efficiencies within the process by scheduling and transmitting drivers and equipment for transportation of materials, freight, service, or emergency repairs. All efforts must comply with Health, Safety, and Environmental standards. Duties include using radio, telephone, or computer to transmit assignments and compile statistics and reports on work progress.

Essential Functions

 

Operational Performance & Best Business Practices

  • Schedules and dispatches drivers to appropriate locations according to customer requests for pickup, car crushing specifications, or additional needs.
  • Addresses questions, problems, and requests for service or equipment by conferring with drivers.
  • Relays information to or from the Logistics Manager and other Dispatchers.
  • Organizes road-testing requirements for newly hired drivers.
  • Monitors and updates the SAI system to illustrate scale crossing times, load weights, freight weights, and driving hours to ensure DOT compliance.
  • Manages Railcar Utilization tracking.
  • Assists with barge contracts and pricing.

Equipment & Maintenance

  • Monitors equipment locations and utilization to coordinate required maintenance and appropriate transfers.
  • Monitors railcar maintenance.

Internal Control Responsibilities

  • Supports the Internal Control process, understanding, communicating, and complying with defined internal controls.
  • Suggests and makes modifications to policies, procedures, and controls to better relate to the business.
  • Communicates upward about problems in operations, noncompliance with the code of conduct, or other policy violations or illegal actions.

Interpersonal Contacts

  • Direct contact with OTR Drivers, Customers, Facilities & Operations Manager, Logistics Manager, and other Dispatchers.
  • Communication via face-to-face interaction, radio, telephone, and computer.

Job Conditions

  • Occasional exposure to all weather conditions.
  • Physical hazards such as noise, fumes, and dirt due to equipment, machinery, and scrap in the yard.
  • Safety shoes, hardhats, and eye protection are required to mitigate risks.
  • Handling multiple safety and maintenance issues can increase pressure.
  • Unpredictable workload and substantial pressure during peak times.
  • Critical deadlines requiring considerable adaptability.
  • Disturbances of work flow and irregularities in work schedule are expected intermittently.
  • Extra hours may be required, including weekends, weekdays, and holidays.
