About the Role - The role of a Senior Automation Specialist is crucial in ensuring the smooth execution of projects within an engineering context. Being responsible for the Engineering Lead underscores their significance in the technical hierarchy, highlighting their expertise and accountability for project-related technicalities. This dual capacity of working independently and collaboratively underscores their adaptability to project needs, showcasing their versatility and flexibility in addressing varied project requirements.

Key Duties and Responsibilities –

Operations

·         Participate in the mechanical and electrical design, programming and commissioning of projects.

·         Develop structures and systems within the execution side of the business to promote efficiencies and to strive for constant improvement.

·         Manage and monitor small-sized projects and coordinate with the Account Managers to maintain an efficient level of staffing.

·         Monitor the project management of costs, deliverables, scope change, schedule, and completion timelines are also within the domain of responsibility for projects sold.

·         Complete Purchasing Requisitions on the required forms with sufficient detail to cover all requisite requirements, when completing paperwork group materials separately to assist in identifying purchase requirements all in accordance with company policies and procedures.

·         Learn and apply the requirements of each of the various industries in which we work including, but not limited to, the Good Manufacturing Practices, the Generally Accepted Automation Practices, the Safety and Environmental Practices, the hardware, the software requirements, and the terminologies.

·         Travel both locally and internationally to support customers as required. Although not always regular, the potential for travel does exist and at times can be extensive.

·         Support customers during regular hours, after hours and on weekends as required.

Technical

·         Participate in the mechanical engineering and design of projects including following in house design protocols, completion of robotic cell layouts, including reach studies, part handling concepts and design, machined component design and material specification, hydraulic and pneumatic design and component specification, fastener and fitting specification, bill of materials and any other design documentation required.

·         Participate in the electrical engineering and design of projects including completion of power calculations, circuit sizing, fusing requirements, component evaluation and selection, panel layouts, bill of materials, automation architectures, communication network layouts, cable schedules and any other design documentation required.

·         Participate in the programming of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC’s), Programmable Automation Controllers (PAC’s), Human Machine Interfaces (HMI’s) as well as proprietary automation controllers. Programming these systems includes meeting with customers to establish their specific requirements, reviewing the controls and hardware design for the system, preparing logic (either from scratch or based on customer templates) in the office, testing and/or simulating the logic prior to going to site and finally debugging and commissioning the software at the customers’ location.

·         Participate in the programming of Robotic Systems including pick and place units and multi-axis robots including preparation of software, setup and calibration and testing of equipment on site.

·         Participate in the programming, setup, testing and commissioning of drives and motors including servo systems, variable frequency drives, across the line starters, soft starts and any other form of motion control specified for a project. This includes research into the functionality of each system, learning and practicing safe startup procedures for each device and successfully implementing each device as part of an overall automation solution.

·         Participate in the commissioning and testing of systems on site. This includes utilizing test and calibration equipment to determine the status of various components, debugging circuits and providing direction to others on the corrective action required or applying corrective action yourself (where permitted and safe to do so.) g. Provide technical support to customers who have questions about automation systems with which we have previous experience or have competent knowledge of. Technical support may be handled over the phone, via email or in person on site as the project requires.

 

Skills and Qualifications –

·         Requires a post-secondary diploma or an equivalent level of literacy relating to the fields of Engineering, Automation and/or Robotics.

·         Working knowledge of computerized reporting systems and word process/spreadsheet software will be mandatory.

·         Ability to organize the various functions for which the position is responsible – must be a detailed individual.

·         Ability to resist stress created by unequal workloads and maintain a persistent and pleasant disposition with customers, management, field and office employees.

·         Requires strong mechanical and electrical aptitudes and experience in the automation industry, specifically with regard to electrical drawing review, standard coding practices for PLC and HMI’s / SCADA systems typically found in industrial control systems.

·         Ability to work with a multitude of different vendors’ hardware to execute required duties and responsibilities.

·         Strong troubleshooting skills, quick and decisive learning curve regarding drawings and systems previously completed by others.

·         Ability to manage time effectively and work closely coordinating with other departments and individuals.

·         Ability to coach subordinate team members and provide feedback and direction on their development and training.

·         Although the majority of our Client’s  workload will be domestic (within 4 hours of travel from head office), some traveling from time to time may be required.
