Job Summary: 

Provide assistance to all Physicians and Professionals with patient exams/testing and the efficient flow of patients through the clinic, while providing quality and confidential health care to patients. 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
•    Promptly and professionally assists the Physician in patient care.
•    Assists patients with paperwork
•    Performs technical workups, patient interviews and special testing. 
•    Communicates with patients regarding follow-up care, surgeries, procedures, changes in schedule, symptoms, surgery scheduling, etc. 
•    Maintains and cleans all equipment being used. 
•    Returns phone calls to patients and pharmacies.
•    Assists in minor surgery.
•    Maintains patient confidentiality.
•    Efficiently and accurately interviews patients and documents histories.
•    Administer topical ophthalmic or oral medications.
•    Accurately performs: 
o    Refractions        
o    Lensometry
o    Keratometry
o    Tonometry
o    Visual fields
o    Pachymetry

o    Amslers
o    Muscle testing
o    Pupil exams
o    Topography
o    NFA
o    OCT 
o    Fundus Photos
o    Anterior Seg Photos
o    Dry eye testing
o    Cataract testing
o    Refractive testing
•    Stock and tidy rooms daily
Technology Used:
•    Electronic mail software – Outlook
•    Internet browser software – Chrome
•    Medical Software - EMA
•    Multi-line phone system
•    Complex office machinery
•    Complex medical machines and tools are used in testing/evaluating patients
Minimum Education Requirements:
•    High school diploma or GED.
•    Previous experience or training in this or similar position
•    Successful completion of Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology Certified Ophthalmic Assistant requirements – To be successfully completed one year after probation period.
Non-Essential Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities: 
•    Good understanding of ophthalmic practice and patient care. 
•    Knowledge of medical instrumentation and its proper care and usage. 
•    Ability to assess common safety hazards and take precautions to establish a safe work environment. 
•    Ability to communicate with patients, physicians, professionals, and associates. 
•    Willingness to help in all areas and understand the need for efficient use of time.
•    Demonstrates working knowledge of eye anatomy, disease, symptoms and ocular meds. 
•    Has a working understanding of A-scans, fundus photos, nerve fiber analysis and fluorescein angiography. 
•    Has basic knowledge of contact lenses. 
•    Utilizes proper eyedrop technique and sterility. 
•    Understands and uses proper sterile techniques. 
•    Utilizes proper universal precaution procedures. 
•    Understands characteristics of common anterior segment disorders and oculoplastic conditions. 
•    Understands and communicates well to patients about cataract and oculoplastic surgery. 
•    Knows how to order IOLs. 
•    Understands and communicates well to patients about LASIK parameters. 
•    Understands and follows procedures for surgical and procedural consents. 
•    Displays consistent professionalism. 
•    Is enthusiastic and empathetic with patients.  
•    Scribes readily when given dictation.
•    Demonstrates flexibility in job assignment. 
•    Demonstrates initiative in accomplishing practice goals. 
•    Maintains certification.
Physical Demands:
•    Very active position, frequently moving body, arms, fingers, and legs due to machine adjustments.
•    Occasionally may lift no more than 25 pounds.
•    Must be able to read and write.
•    Must be able to communicate via phone.
•    Must have manual dexterity to work with ophthalmic equipment.

•    This job operates in a medical care facility working indoors in environmentally controlled conditions.
•    Job tasks are performed in close physical proximity to other people.
•    This role also routinely comes into contact with patients who may or may not have contagious illnesses.
•    This role routinely works around medical device and patient testing equipment.
•    Requires wearing common protective or safety equipment
