Job Summary:

 

Under the guidance of the Cell Leader and CNC Brush Production Technician, learns and performs all skills and tasks required to safely operate a variety of CNC brush drilling and filling machines, trimming and slotting equipment to produce a variety of rotary, cylinder and hand maintenance brushes that consistently meet customer specifications for quality, quantity and on-time delivery (OTD). Specifically, a CNC Brush Production Operator’s duties include, but are not limited to, drilling/filling/trimming/slotting machine operation; visual inspection and repair of parts; and construction, packing and labeling of boxes.  All machine programming and setup are done by the CNC Brush Production Technician. Responsible for obtaining first-piece inspection from designated personnel, and following all prescribed quality inspection requirements.

 

Essential Functions:

 

The incumbent is cross-trained to operate a variety of CNC drilling/filling/trimming/slotting machines and equipment to produce a variety of rotary, cylinder and hand maintenance brushes according to work orders and blueprints:

  • Machine Operation: Gathers blocks or cylinders and filler materials. Works with wood and plastic blocks and cylinders and various natural and manmade filler materials including but not limited to natural fiber, nylon, and wire. Loads machine with materials; starts machine; drills and fills entire brush, moving block if necessary from drill to fill side; runs through trimmer if necessary; slots blocks as necessary; operates balancer machine as necessary; Runs entire job; obtains inspection from Technician, Cell Leader or Quality Assurance on determined percentage of parts and completes appropriate paperwork; visually inspects each brush for quality; repairs brushes as necessary; empties shavings from vacuum into garbage can as needed and occasionally lifts and transports 150-pound garbage can with assistance from coworker.
  • Assembly: Attaches various hardware such as risers and plates using drills, screwdrivers, hammer and pliers as required.
  • Large Cylinder production requires manual insertion of 80-pound steel mandrils into 25-pound plastic cylinders. Also requires frequent loading and unloading of cylinders weighing 10 to 50 pounds 3 – 15 times per hour.
  • Packing/Labeling: Constructs boxes to appropriate size as needed using band saw, staple gun, utility knife, foot stapler; packs finished products into boxes, affixes labels and operator stamp; seals box and loads onto pallet with appropriate paperwork.
  • Lifts 50-pound boxes of raw material daily.
  • Communicates with other shift employees to relay status of in-process jobs and machines. Performs other standard Essential Functions as follows:
  •  Has regular and punctual attendance in accordance with company attendance policy.
  • Complies with all company policies and procedures;
  • Follows all safety rules and regulations, including wearing required and recommended safety equipment and following safety precautions on materials as per MSDS sheets.
  • Adheres to all environmental regulations.
  • Attends and participates in all required training sessions.
  • Works as a team member.
  • Exercises proper care in the use of tools, equipment and materials. Performs routine preventive maintenance and minor repairs to tools and equipment, and refers major repairs to Machine Shop or Maintenance Department. Maintains work areas in a neat and orderly condition. Completes all required records, reports, and forms in a neat, accurate and timely fashion. Detects and reports any faulty equipment, defective material, improper operation, unsafe or unusual condition to a supervisor or other responsible manager .Seeks to always improve production processes, product quality, and worker safety. Follows all written and verbal instructions. Completes all other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Manual dexterity and ability to use hand tools in order to operate drilling/filling/trimming/slotting machines and assemble parts
  • Ability to lift up to 50-pound cylinders in Large Cylinder Cell 3 – 15 times per hour
  • Ability to occasionally lift 60-pound boxes of materials and frequently lift finished brushes weighing up to 25 pounds

Environment:

While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is exposed to noise, fumes from solvents, dust from natural filler materials, dirt and flying clippings. The incumbent is required to wear safety glasses and ear protection at all times.  Gloves may be worn to protect skin from scrapes and cuts from wire and other filler materials.  Extreme caution must be used while working with filling/drilling/trimming/slotting machines to avoid severe injuries or loss of hands and fingers.

 

Physical Demands:

While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is required to continuously stand and perform repetitive motions on fast-paced machines; frequently walk and lift up to 25-pound parts; and occasionally bend and lift, push and pull up to 60-pound boxes of raw materials and climb ladders.

 

Large Cylinders:

Employees working in the Large Cylinder Cell are required to load and unload cylinders weighing 10 to 50 pounds 3 – 15 times per hour.
